Brides Beware...Platinum Weddings meet Nightmare on Elm Street    posted 10/26/2013

I recently got married at the Surf Club June 21st of 2013. While my wedding day without a doubt is still the rave amongst all my guests, in large it’s due to the external assistance of my wedding planner. There is no denying that the venue is exquisite and breathtaking, making it a picture perfect location but that is one of the few highlights of the venue. The staff for the most part is a downhill roller coaster ride that will challenge mostly every decision for selecting the location to host one of the most important days in your life. My dream wedding location immediately started becoming a nightmare after we signed the contract! My husband and I originally committed with the sales manager Carlo Lenzi, who later on was let go or as the establishment told us (retired); this was after many unsuccessful attempts at getting in contact with Carlo and the establishment for weeks. Prior to being assigned to Jamie Gizzo it became IMPOSSIBLE to get a hold of any sales manager; when we did, they always rushed us which was followed by poor customer service and communications.

Our newly assigned sales manager only served to further taint our experience. Jamie Gizzo proved himself to be inadequate, very removed from providing personalized service, and was extremely inattentive! He never took the time to familiarize himself with our wedding details. It became frustrating having to constantly correct him on vital details such as: our wedding date, contract details, deposits, & payments just to name a few. Disappointed & now apprehensive eight months prior to our wedding, my husband and I began to question moving forward with the venue despite knowing we would lose our deposit. The expectation with such an exquisite establishment is an excellent and above average standard of service which should have eased some of the stress factors associated with planning a major event but this was not the case rather; it became clear that they no longer cared for our needs or concerns now that we were committed to them. With so much more at stake, rational thinking took precedence; with our wedding planner from Florida conferenced in, we addressed our concerns with Jamie who put all of our requests in writing and reassured us that the service leading up to & on the day of would be reflective of the establishment as well as our expectations.

The nightmare we had embarked on became real just two weeks before our wedding date. The runaround and blatant misguidance made it a trying time during the final stretch.
1. We were constantly harassed to bring additional payments despite our contract outlining our two major lump sums.
2.We were denied a food tasting as well as the cake tasting that was originally discussed with our original sales manager Carlo Lenzi.
3.We were required to submit a fire retardant certificate for all of our linen since we were supplying our own & we were then told to bring them in prior to the wedding so they can be brought to the fire department for testing which was refuted by the New Rochelle fire department. Per the fire department they had NEVER done any such testing to date!
4.Simple dimensions of the tables became an absolute impossibility to obtain. We were first given inaccurate table sizes by the house florist assistant Linda. What should have been a known fact to most any staff member at the Surf Club required many persistent phone calls & email correspondence before obtaining (continue on weddingwire.com)

Bad Bride & Groom    posted 9/6/2013

As per the complaint below from two con-artists that are a “Fortune 500 couple” maybe because they scam people and don’t pay their vendors, below please see our responses per paragraph in red. You will see that all allegations are untrue, and proven according to emails that Michelle Ragusa has sent.

Here is the story:

CAUTION - DO NOT book wedding at Surf Club in New Rochelle!

We had our wedding at the Surf Club in New Rochelle in July 2013. We had read the other horrible reviews but somehow thought it was other people just griping. Boy, were we wrong!

We had the same experience as most of the bad reviews:

- Slow service, no callbacks: Below is a response from Michelle Ragusa, email dated June 30 covering all three of these comments:

Which leads me to Jamie, who has been PHENOMENAL! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Truly, you have always taken my call- been there to answer any question big or small. You really give the feeling that you understand how stressful this is and truly care about making the customer happy. When Carlo disappeared, and Rick never called, you were there. I explained my worry over the fact that our contract which we agreed upon with Carlo was different when we went to give our down payment.

Lack of care, extremely low attention to detail
- Big promises in sales room, little delivery on big day: This is a response from Michelle Ragusa, email dated June 30 covering all three of these comments:

We came into your establishment in July of last year 2012. We met Carlo, and immediately fell in love with the place. He was very responsive via email, and helpful. We immediately agreed and left our down payment. He did not always have the best memory, but always seemed to make up for it with apology and care. He, Jay and I agreed on the package with the Viennese hour. We got so specific in details, we even spoke about the red, white and blue sparkles on the gelato! He painted a vision any bride and groom would cherish on their most beautiful day. He compelled us to book on the 4th of July, a Thursday (which I was originally not fond of) and said he could get us a good rate b/c of the day. He depicted every aspect of a perfect day from the fireworks over the Long Island Sound to the Strawberry Dacqueries/Pina Coladas to the Viennese Hour. We took into consideration Jay is Canadian (and Canada Day is July 1) and we thought it would be a fun theme and holiday for our relatives. Perfect…

However, it got much worse!
1. DISHONESTY - They disrupted our wedding after the ceremony and demanded $2,500 cash before they would serve dinner. This was a false claim of "extra people" and they would not accept a check or credit card. Our groomsman had to drive all over town looking for ATM's - this delayed the wedding 90 minutes and we were not able to have a proper dance. My bride was obviously in a panic and there was no reasoning - I overheard the owner, Sal, swear at us while he was talking with one of his minions.: According to their floor plan which Michelle and Jay created they were well aware that they had extra people and an extra table that they tried to sneak in. This is why as per the contract all final bills are to be paid two weeks prior to avoid this issue especially on the day of the event.

2. BAIT AND SWITCH - We negotiated our wedding with their salesperson, got it in writing, and then he mysteriously dissappeared from the place. We got a call mo

2. BAIT AND SWITCH - We negotiated our wedding with their salesperson, got it in writing, and then he mysteriously dissappeared from the place. We got a call months later, after paying $5K in downpayment saying "are you still getting married here?" We received a call 6 days before the wedding and they changed the signed contract by removing the Viennese hour unless we paid more!

3. UNETHICAL - They wanted everything in cash since the day we locked in our date. Perhaps everything isn't on the up-and-up. Will copy IRS on this review.

4. BROKEN PROMISES - Everything from "top shelf" liquor that was never served, to carving stations that never appeared. They force you to use their florist who then significantly overcharges. They promised to charge "half price" for children and vendors - they ended up charging us full price and more.

5. POOR TREATMENT of vendors - the photo booth guy had to carry his equipment up the stairs because they gave him a liability excuse on the elevator. The DJ, videographer and photographer were all limited to what they could do and where they could go even though we had the place to ourselves. While they were demanding the extra cash from #1 above - they would not let the DJ play music.

Needless to say, it was a cluster from the very beginning. They have a nice location, but feel that no effort or investment needs to be made on customer service.

Two thumbs down.

Overall decent experience, but an AMAZING day!    posted 4/20/2013

We had both our ceremony and reception at Surf Club. Overall, we were very happy with our experience, but there were some bumps along the way. Our first account manager there left without us ever being made aware. So, for weeks, we tried to get ahold of him to no avail. Finally, we found out he was no longer there, and were assigned to a new manager, Jaime. He was very helpful in setting up all parts of our wedding & even threw in some extras when we met with him for the first time. His followthrough was great, but we were worried at times because he would forget about one thing or another in our discussions. It all worked out in the end, though. The house florist there was fabulous!!

The actual day-of was spectacular, for the most part. Thank God I had assigned my new sister-in-law to check over the centerpieces (we made our own), though, as even though I gave them written directions with photos, SC still did not set them up correctly. Other than that and a floral mishap (all the flowers were there, but were given to the wrong people), everything went very smoothly. They even extended our event time at no charge, as one of the shuttles was late in bringing guests. They also packed my car up at the end of the night with the gifts, any leftover decor items, and a few boxes of pastries since my husband and I never even made it to the venetian hour because of photos being taken. I would HIGHLY recommend you ask for Merrill for your Bridal Attendant--she was AMAZING and was worth every penny of her tip. She mainly stayed attending to me for the day, but also kept my husband calm and updated on anything. She was phenomenal and catered to everything I asked.

Although we had a bumpy start, everything really turned out stunning at Surf Club and we were extremely happy with our day. We still get comments all the time on how our wedding was the best wedding people had ever been to, which is a HUGE compliment!!

Best Wedding EVER    posted 4/1/2013 (updated 4/1/2013)

I got married two weeks ago and people are still talking about my wedding. Jamie and his staff treated me like family from the moment I walked in the door. Lisa, the florist totally knocked it out of the park. My bouquet was absolutely gorgeous and my girls flowers were amazing. Lisa even went out of her way to get rhinestone ribbon for my cake, which was beautiful. Rick and his staff were flawless, the service was incredible. My guests were raving about how attentive the staff was. Jimmy, the head bartender, kept the drinks flowing all night. My guests were amazed how how smoothly everything ran. The food was plentiful and actually very good. I know sometimes wedding halls have crappy food but Surf Club put out an amazing spread from cocktail hour right into Venitain hour. Everything was AMAZiNG and I would recommend Surf Club to anyone looking for the picture perfect place for their wedding or event.

FANTASTIC VENUE!!    posted 12/8/2012

If I could describe the Surf Club with one word it would be PHENOMENAL. We were more than pleased with their outstanding customer service, fantastic food, the mesmerizing view and overall elegance of the venue! From the first day we met with the Surf Club staff and all the way through the end, they mirrored the definition of quality service! We specifically worked with George Guarnieri, who looked out for our best interests for the entire day. All menu items were delivered, all promises were kept, all suggestions were carried out, and most of all, they were very attentive and helpful throughout the entire process. Any time I had a question, or wanted to make a quick meeting, they were readily available. I never left a message that was not returned! The hanging chandeliers, the beautiful staircase, the bridal suite, the ballroom with beautiful centerpieces, were all breathtaking! The fountains outside were lit, and from the second you pull into the driveway, and walk in, the feeling of "OH MY GOODNESS" comes over you. This is an absolutely STUNNING venue! Lisa, the in-house florist, did a fantastic job with the flowers! She helped us meet our budget goals and gave us many recommendations and alternative ways to save, and made us feel confident that our reception hall would be as beautiful as it was! The outside view of the Surf Club is simply astounding. Cocktail hour and dessert hour were both held in a beautiful glass room overlooking the water. My guests raved about the view and the food was absolutely AMAZING! The menu had a number of different choices and George was very thorough and gave details for each item that would be served. The flexibility and choices on the menu made it very easy to please all my guests; our families were both more than satisfied! They couldn't believe the amount of food, and moreover, the quality of food that was served. The dessert hour was an experience people never have had before! I am still getting calls over how great the food and dessert was! I HIGHLY recommend the Surf Club with great confidence they will make your wedding an absolute dream come true. With exceptional service, communication, flexibility, delicious food, and beautiful ambience of the venue, leaves us without any complaints at all! Thank you George, and the entire Surf Club staff for making our day truly memorable!

Best Reception Ever!!!!    posted 11/26/2012

We chose the surf club after viewing all of the other reception sites on the same strip. We definitely saved the best for last! After a long tiring day of viewing reception sites, we finally came to our afternoon appointment at the surf club. It was love at first site!!! I absolutely knew we had to have our reception there.

To start off, the entrance is amazing and it looks even more spectacular at night with all of the outside lights on. When you enter the actual building, you first see the grand staircase which is overwhelmingly beautiful. The bridal suite is much bigger than any other bridal suite at the other reception sites and the furniture is just so grand! Definitely would make any bride feel like a princess.

We had our reception downstairs in the grand ballroom which had a chandelier that looked amazing when it was lit up. The grand ballroom also has a full bar on one side which is really cool. My husband loved that addition. People hung around the bar when they went for drinks and it really gave it this old school chill out feeling. The service is also impeccable. Our bridal attendant Demi was with us the entire night making sure we had something to drink and eat while were moving around greeting our guests and dancing. George made sure everything went according to schedule the whole night and he was such a pleasure to deal with each time we went to make payments and drop off our reception items. I honestly could not have asked for a more beautiful reception.

It's been two weeks since our wedding and we are still getting compliments about the place and the food which I am very happy about. No complaints here about this amazing place. It definitely made for an awesome wedding reception!

Amazing Day!    posted 10/28/2012

The Surf Club is absolutely stunning with its grand staircase, beautiful chandeliers, and beach front setting. We had a great experience planning our wedding with their sales manager Carlo. On our wedding day we arrived late (due to our limo driver getting lost), but the Surf Club staff was understanding, patient and accommodating. Our maitre’d (Joe) and bridal attendant (Demi) were amazing and communicated well with our DJ, photographer and videographer to make time for us to take pictures with our families and bridal party. They truly went above and beyond our expectations. Our guests are STILL talking about how beautiful it was and how great the food was – the Venetian hour was especially popular. We would highly recommend the Surf Club for its amazing atmosphere, food, and service!

Surf Club    posted 7/14/2012

Surf Club was beautiful, has a wow factor on the entrance with fountains and huge staircase, and great view for cocktail area. The place was pricey, but comparable to those in the area. The staff seemed very interested in making money and threw nothing in. Every addition we wanted was another charge, another fee, and banquet manager did not know too much about event logistics. My biggest issue with the Surf CLub was that you had to use their florist, who was ridiculously overpriced. We paid $150 for a simple centerpiece that I was quoted $40 for elsewhere. When booking the place, the BM told us the florist was "reasonable" and the flowers were anything but. Overall the maitre de and bridal attendant were very helpful adn tried to have the day run as smoothly as possible. Would recommend, but know what you are getting into!

Big bonus, they made sure WE ate as well! The staff at the surf club treated us and our guests with great respect! Absolutely fabulous and gorgeous venue! Amazing Day!    posted 6/15/2012

The day of the wedding was amazing. The service was beyond what I had expected. I could have not asked for a better maitre'd than Buddy. I met him a few days before for the drop off and he assured me everything would run smooth. He made sure that everything ran smoothly and coordinated all the staff as well as the other vendors. My bridal attendant was at my side all the time. She always made sure my husband and I had a drink in our hands and had food to eat. Whatever we didn't touch she packed up for us to take. She also made sure that everything we brought was boxed and ready to go at the end of the night.

The venue alone was beautiful which was the original reason we chose it. The room was bright and new. Cocktail hour on the patio felt like I was somewhere in the Mediterranean. The ceremony grounds were great and beautiful. I ended up having our photos with the family and bridal party at the hall instead of a separate location. It saved on timing.

Lastly, the food! It was delicious. I must admit I was worried about the food because I've never been to a party at the Surf Club. I'm Italian and anybody Italian knows how important the food is. It's not about the quantity as much as it's about the quality. The Surf Club did not disappoint. The food was plentiful and delicious. As I am writing this my mouth is watering thinking about the scallops wrapped in bacon and the coconut shrimp. For our entrees our bridal attendant served us one of everything.

Not only am I thrilled that we decided to get married there but I am now confident I made the right decision because my friends and family can't stop talking about how much they enjoyed themselves!

I stand by my rating however I will be honest. There were a few things that I would comment on. Sometimes I felt that the banquet managers could have been more responsive. Also, on the day of the wedding the ceremony started a little late because people were arriving late because of traffic. Because the ceremony cut into cocktail hour, the cocktail hour was cut a bit. My husband and I were annoyed and thought it should have been for the entire hour. In hindsight I should have told guests to arrive a 1/2 hour prior to the ceremony. I thought noting that the ceremony began "promptly" at 5pm would be enough of an indicator.

Couldn't Be Happier    posted 5/26/2012

We had our wedding at the Surf Club in May 2012 and couldn't be happier! We started planning 1 1/2 years before so we had a lot of time to get to know the staff there and for the most part it was smooth sailing!! Our only complaint would be that the cake baker was completely unwilling to talk to us directly but despite this the cake came out great! Carlo made sure that everything went smoothly and on the day of our Maitre D Joey and Bridal Attendant Demi were SPECTACULAR!! Every time we turned around they were there making sure that we were ok and that we didn't need anything. As a bride, Demi was a life saver! She fixed my dress, carried my shoes, got me drinks, made sure I ate, and had a smile on her face through it all.. AMAZING! We were 100% happy with our wedding at the Surf Club and would absolutely recommend this venue.

These people do weddings all the time. They make the Brides life easier because they really know what they are doing. They tend to do really traditional (NY Italian style) weddings so will push you in this direction if you dont have specific ideas. I absolutley loved working with Arty their florist!!! He is the BEST I would chose him again if I had a choice ( at surf club you dont have the choice for in house flowers). They were a bit expensive and our ability in bargaining with them was limited. We were annoyed at one thing. The cocktail hour was outside overlooking the long island sound in November... They told us they would have see through plastic up so we could see the water... They had curtains covering the windows and you could not see the sound. Otherwise they really took case of everything and were very available through out the process. The food was really good I loved the cannoli filling in the cake! Yum. My bridal attendant was ok. She was kind of blah in terms of personality but was helpful.

Pretty Good    posted 9/1/2011

For the amount of money that you pay to have a wedding at the Surf Club, I expected a little more care and warmth while trying to figure out all the details of the 'big day.' We were very pleased until we started having to deal with the General Manager, who was also our Maitre'd on the night. He was a little cold, and really didn't seem like he cared too much, although when sharing our complaints with people that have worked with him, assured us that he would make our wedding perfect. There were some very unprofessional email exchanges (misspellings, tons of slang) that really made me second guess the level of service that we were getting. When the limo made us 15 mins late to the ceremony, he was obviously angry, which made me feel really badly 10 minutes before I was supposed to get married! By the end of the night, he had warmed up and even did a shot with us, but I'm wondering if that's just because he had a tip in his pocket. The food was really really good (cake was dry, have to use the in-house baker) and the drinks were flowing, and at the end of the day everyone was happy and had a good time, which is what really matters to me. Also, the in-house florist is Awesome, which made me happy as well. All in all, I'd recommend, but fair warning about the treatment. It's fine, but for the price, I would expect a little more.

Only downfall, pretty expensive, but all of the sites in New Rochelle along the Sound are costly.

WOw x100000000. The Surf Club is gorgeous. My husband and I felt like a king and a queen. They have just completed millions of dollars in renovation from a marble fountain outside to a double marble stair case. This place is elegance all around. The people working your wedding are no joke. They take your day seriously and are sure that everything goes your way. They are pleasant, polite, and run a smooth but tight ship. If you want an absolutley flawless wedding day in a venue to drool over you HAVE to go to the surf club. The food is OUTSTANDING. People are still talking about the food and the service there. During the cocktail hour all of out 250 some odd guests had a chair to sit and eat on a massive balcony overlooking the long island sound. Words can not express the beauty of the surf club or the flawlessness of their staff. You have to go see for yourself. Guaranteed you will walk away booking the venue. Thank you to the surf club for making our wedding day spectacular!

Amazing!!    posted 7/1/2011

I'm stopping to write this before I go on my honeymoon because I have so much I want to say about the Surf Club, and I don't want to forget one thing!
From the very beginning Chris Gizzo and Artie D'Alessio were a pleasure to work with. They helped us stay within our budget, and were always very responsive to our emails and calls. My wedding day was simply amazing. The service was impeccable - my wine glass was always full - a glass of cognac was always in my husband's hand without him having to ask. My guests are still gushing about the amazing time they had.
My bridal attendant, Meryl, was awesome.
She made sure the bridal party was served appetizers while taking photos, I didn't get a chance to eat anything -she waited for me to finish with my photos and handed me a filet mignon pinwheel - it was like the gift of gold (and delicious)! She had more sent to the bridal suite once she saw the look of joy on my face. She even cleaned my husband's suit jacket when he spilled something on himself - it’s the small things that mean so much.
Artie did so much more than just providing us with amazing flowers. He came in on his day off for our wedding rehearsal, and on my wedding day he made sure my flowers were exactly as I wanted. Artie is simply a delight to work with - he made sure we stayed within our budget for flowers while providing us with a gorgeous arrangement. By the day of my wedding he was so much more than just the florist at the Surf Club - he was, and is 'my Artie'...
Chris made sure from start to finish we had nothing to worry about. Since he has always been so attentive and accommodating from the start, it meant so much to me to have him there on our wedding day. He made sure my husband and I were served all three dishes that were the available choices, and since we were too excited and busy greeting guests to finish eating, Meryl made sure all three meals and our slices of wedding cake were packed up for us - and I have to add that the food and my wedding cake were simply divine.
I feel so lucky and blessed to start my new family with my surf club family. If you want to have an amazing wedding with fabulous service at a gorgeous venue, the Surf Club is the way to go.
